Braving the Storm: 5 Essential Items for a Perfect Rainy Dog Walk

Rainy weather may pose a challenge for dog owners, but it doesn't have to ruin your walks! Equipped with the proper gear, you and your canine companion can still have a great time outdoors, even when the weather is not ideal. This article will discuss five crucial items that will help keep both of you dry and comfortable while dealing with puddles and light rain. Whether you're taking a short walk or embarking on a more exciting adventure, these essentials will guarantee that you enjoy your rainy day outings to the fullest.

Water-proof coat (for the humans)

During rainy times, a high-quality waterproof coat is essential for dog owners/walkers. Here's why it's important:

  • Comfort: Stay dry for a comfortable walk and enjoyable time with your dog.

  • Protection from the Elements: A waterproof coat shields you from rain, cold, and wind.

  • Freedom to Explore: Venture out in any weather, ensuring your dog's exercise needs are met.

  • Style and Functionality: Choose from stylish designs without compromising on function.

Invest in a quality waterproof coat to make every walk delightful, regardless of the weather. Check out these top recommendations for rainy weather:

This coat is something I have had my eye on since winter last year, and will definitely be taking the plunge to purchase it prior to winter this year. Unlike most raincoats, this coat is full-length! Keeping your legs dry keeps you even more comfortable. Although stating it is a changing robe, these have become increasingly popular among the dog walking community, as they provide so many helpful features; Water-proof outer fabric, full zip closure, towelled lining & two front pockets.

If you're looking for an effective lightweight waterproof jacket, then this may be something to consider. It's a breathable, lightweight, pack-a-way, waterproof jacket. This is perfect for those strange in-between months, where a coat is too warm, but you still don't want to get wet. Have a look: Lightweight Raincoat

Water-proof coat (for the dogs)

Having a waterproof coat for your dog when it rains is essential for:

  1. Comfort and Warmth: A waterproof coat keeps dogs dry, insulates body heat, and prevents chills, crucial for smaller breeds or those with shorter fur.

  2. Health Protection: Prevents health issues like hypothermia or respiratory problems from prolonged exposure to rain and cold.

  3. Easier Clean-Up: Minimizes mud and moisture transfer to your home and car, reducing post-walk baths and cleaning time.

  4. Encouragement to Walk: A comfortable, waterproof coat makes dogs feel more secure and willing to go outside, ensuring they get exercise regardless of the weather.

Investing in a waterproof coat for the furry friends can be so crucial, I have some canine clients that refuse to walk in the rain, unless they have a coat on - shoutout to the dachshunds lol. I've done the research so you didn't have to, take a look:

This is a personal favourite of mine, its so stylish, effective, and also has a fleece lining, which is perfect for those shorter haired dogs, that may struggle in the cold in the winter months. It comes in a range of colours and sizes, take a look here: Water-proof Fleece Lining Dog Coat

This next one is so so perfect for the poodle-mixes, and long-haired puppers. This is a waterproof and windproof raincoat, but he best thing about it is: it covers legs, meaning that we are so much less likely to have to deal with muddy legs, knots and grass stains! Another amazing feature is that the inner lining of the coat is silky, meaning that it doesn't cause any knots or tangles. Take a look: Waterproof Full Body Dog Coat

Good Quality Dog Towels

Quick-dry towels are essential for rainy dog walks:

  1. Immediate Clean-Up: Wipe down your dog quickly to remove mud and moisture after a wet walk.

  2. Comfort: Absorb moisture to keep your dog warmer and more comfortable, especially for smaller breeds.

  3. Convenience: Lightweight and portable for easy on-the-go clean-ups.

  4. Odour Control: Reduce dampness and prevent unpleasant smells.

  5. Durability and Efficiency: Absorb more water, dry quickly, and are long-lasting.

Use quick-dry towels for a smoother transition from outdoor to indoor moments, ensuring your dog stays comfortable and your home clean. As a dog walker, having a large supply of towels is an absolute holy-grail, although my washing machine may not agree! It is so important to me that I am keeping my canine clients comfortable, clean and dry. Here are my go-tos:

I have personally tried and tested these towels myself, and they're fabulous, they are microfibre, quick drying and super absorbent. Have a look: Quick Drying Dog Towels

I have a clients that swear by these doggy towel robes, they are perfect for quickly popping onto your pup after a soggy walk, effectively drying them and keeping them warm. Here they are: Towel Robe

water-proof walking boots (for the humans of course)

Investing in waterproof walking boots is essential for dog owners in rainy conditions. Here’s why they should be on your list:

  1. Enhanced Traction: Non-slip soles provide better traction on wet surfaces, keeping you safe during walks.

  2. Comfort and Support: Waterproof boots keep your feet dry and comfortable, preventing blisters and soreness.

  3. Protection from the Elements: Shield your feet from rain, puddles, and mud for worry-free walks.

  4. Durability: Designed to withstand harsh weather conditions, ensuring long-lasting use.

  5. Versatility: Suitable for hiking, snow, and casual outings, making them a smart addition to your collection.

Waterproof walking boots keep you dry, comfortable, safe, and enhance your outdoor enjoyment. When starting my business, I'm not ashamed to admit, but I thought a comfortable pair of trainers would see me through my days as a dog walker, it's funny thinking back to this. After trialling and testing different types of shoes, through endless blisters, and sore feet, these are my recommendations:

These are water-proof and so supportive, and they also come in so many different colours! Here they are: Women's Waterproof Hiking Boots

And here is a similar pair, but in Men's: Men's Waterproof Hiking Boots

Dog Safety Light

As pet owners, keeping our furry friends safe during walks is crucial, especially in rainy weather. Clip-on dog safety lights offer significant benefits:

In low-light conditions, these lights make your dog stand out, helping drivers and pedestrians see them from a distance. Visibility is key for preventing accidents. A well-lit dog is less likely to be involved in mishaps, giving you peace of mind during drizzly strolls.

Lightweight and easy to attach, clip-on lights are often water-resistant and come in various colours to suit your dog’s style.

I keep a couple of these in my car for my walks, they are so useful, especially for off leash walks, it keeps dogs visible when in that horrible drizzly rain, find them here: Dog Safety Lights

I hope that you find this post helpful! I feel like we are currently going through so many yellow weather warnings on the Isle of Wight, and wanted to share my best tips with you all!
